Nissan Repair: car starts and then dies., fuel pressure regulator, air flow sensor

Question
a while back i bought a 1982 datsun 280zx. this is the L28E engine, non turbo with a 3 speed automatic transmission. the car sat for a while so we had to clean all the injectors. the whole fuel system is clean. the engine has great spark and great compression. the timing is dead on. i pull the injectors out and turned over the engine. all of them are spraying but bearly enough fuel. the engine will start up, run for a second and then die. i can take gas in a spray bottle and run it for however long i want. im guessing its a sensor telling it not to give it enough fuel? the CHTS (cylinder head temp sensor) was broke so i just replaced it with a brand new one. the air flow sensor was also replaced from what the guy had told me. this engine only has 20,000 miles on it. any idea what it could be?

Answer
Joel,

You have repaired or replaced the usual suspects.  Therefore, the only other thing that causes the injector pulse width to be weak is the distributor.  It uses an optical pickup and shutter wheel.  The seal in the bottom of the distributor leaks and oil wicks up the shaft and blocks the signal.  Pull and disassemble the distributor and see if there is oil on the shutter wheel and optics.  If there is replace the unit with a rebuilt one.  Also, be sure to check the fuel pressure to make sure the fuel pressure regulator is not blown or the pump is not providing sufficient pressure.
