Nissan Repair: Ignition switch, nissan altima, trunk locks

Question
I have a 1997 Nissan Altima and I need to change the ignition switch because my key broke and its cheaper than having a new key made.  Can someone please tell me how?

Answer
Hi Jennifer -

The ignition has 2 components, the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch. What you want to replace is the cylinder. This holds the key. Remember that once the cylinder is replaced, you will have to carry another key with you just for the ignition, unless you buy the entire set including trunk locks and door locks, which is very pricey.

Anyway, the housing around the steering column needs to be removed, and then you can gain access to the ignition. It is held by 2 bolts, unfortunately they are tamper resistant and needs to be removed using a pin punch and hammer. Once the ignition switch is removed, then the switch can be removed, and the cylinder can be replaced. When installing, the cylinder hold down bolt heads are designed to snap off after a certain torque, leaving a stud, thus being tamper resistant.

Hope this helps
