I have an 88 Nissan Pulsar. I just got the engine rebuilt and it runs really rough. You can smell that its running rich on gas and has a heavy rumble when its rpm get above 1800. Plus, since the rebuild the gas mileage has dropped from about 24 to 13 what happened?

Hi Stephen -

My first answer would be to take it back to where it was rebuilt and have it fixed. I would not do too much to it, as it might affect any warranty you have.

However, if you want to do a preliminary check, it is definitely running rich, especially if you see black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Pull the spark plugs and see if they all are black or just some of them. If they all are black, then look for a malfunctioning cold start valve, idle solenoid, or any solenoid that controls fuel.
