BMW Repair: 2000 323ci temp sensor, temp guage, gearbox

in regards to your last answer, the temp guage shows 122 degrees as outside temp, does this mean that the two wires are shorted out, my AC does work fine, is there anything else that the sensor could affect?, also the gear box light goes on sometimes when i am driving(which is next to the lcd that tells you what gear you are in) . what is causing this light to go on? when i stop the car and pull the keys out the light will go off, sometimes the light wont go on for a week but i am curious if this could be a serious problem or what causes it

Rich, the temp sensor and wiring are probably the cause of the 122 degree reading. On some of the later cars this will illuminate the check engine light. As for the gearbox light I would have the faults read out to get a better clue as the root of the problem.
