Nissan Repair: Nissan 300zx stalling/no start issue, crank angle sensor, nissan 300zx

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1986 Nissan 300zx non-turbo 5 speed. After driving for about half an hour on the highway it suddenly stalls and will not restart. After sitting for twenty minutes it will restart, but stall again after some more driving. Fuel pressure is good, new fuel filter tried as well. When it is running, all is normal... Than just stops with no warning. Help!

ANSWER: Chris,

Check the computer codes.  I would think, from what you have said, the ignitor is defective.  That is from my own experiences, so check the codes first.  Email me with what you find.

QUESTION: Hello again Von Sudderth. I checked the codes, many were recorded. Code 11 when translated (crank angle sensor) caught my eye, stated in a shop manual this was noted to possible cause other codes and to replace this first. Questions: Could this cause the engine to shut down, if so I am having difficulty finding this part on-line... Is it just the whole distributer? Many thanks and best regards, Chris

Answer
Chris,

Yes,

You found the problem.  Nissan uses an optical pickup and receiver in the distributor.  It is much like the LED in your computer mouse.  The problem with the distributor is with miles and years the shaft seal fails and the optics and shutter wheel get oil on them and that screws up the works.  Replace the distributor with a rebuilt unit and you should have your problem solved.  rockauto.com or courtesynissan.com are two good on-line sources that are cheap alternatives to the dealer or your local parts store.
