Nissan Repair: 88 Nissan Pathfinder - Noise in Steering Column, nissan pathfinder, speedometer cable

Calvin, when I am driving my Pathfinder, about every half mile I hear a "thiiiiiiiiip!" sound coming from the steering column.  It sounds like a rubber belt is coming around to the same point and making a rubbing sound as it goes around a gear.  When I am driving fast, the "thiiiip" sound comes and goes in about 2 seconds, but when I am driving slow, the sound extends for several seconds (making me think it is associated with the odometer somehow).  Any thoughts on what this might be and/or what might be involved in fixing it?  My mechanic is at a loss.  Thanks.

Hi Mike -

Have you checked your speedometer cable? Could need some lubrication. Good way to check it is to disconnect it at the transmission, and drive around. If the sound is gone, then you have found the problem!
