Nissan Repair: speed sensor for 96 maxima, vehicle speed sensor, nissan maxima

Question
I have a 96 nissan maxima and the speed meter does not work anymore, it stays at 0 and the check engine light is on.  How much work is it to change this sensor and can I do it myself?

Answer
David,

The vehicle speed sensor is on the transmission and it only takes a ten millimeter socket to remove.  Purchase a new one and unplug the old one and then unbolt and replace.  Plug the new one into the harness and then disconnect the battery for five minutes to clear the code.  Reconnect and the speedometer should work fine.  The computer picks up the speed at the speedometer head unit.  If the vehicle speed sensor is not working it would have thrown the codes.
