Nissan Repair: 96 Maxima Starting Problem, neutral safety switch, valley heat

Question
I'm a college student and recently purchased a '96 Maxima SE automatic w/ 152k miles on it. I have a question about starting the car. Whenever I go to start the car in the morning, it turns over no problem. But after its been out in the Central valley heat from about 10:00 till 3:00 in the parking lot at campus, and I turn the key all the way, nothing happens (no cranking, noise whatsoever). The dash lights and everything turn on, but just no noise when I turn it all the way. I take out the key, shift it into neutral then back into park, and press the accelerator. After numerous attempts (or 15 - 20secs), I turn the key over and it starts up naturally (very slight hesitation). Any ideas as to what is wrong??? When driving it, nothing seems unnatural, just starting it after its been sitting in the heat (or been driven in heat).
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Chrisopher,

I would check the starter when the vehicle is hot.  That is, jump the starter with a length of wire from the small terminal to the larger terminal.  It should turn over.  If it does not then the starter will need to be rebuilt or replaced.  If the starter turns over check and most probably replace the neutral safety switch.
