Nissan Repair: 1988 Nissan Sentra, nissan sentra, head gasket

Question
My 1988 Nissan Sentra started running very warm in 1988.  The heat gage registered at about 80% when in stop and go traffic.  Ran ok at high speeds (60+ mph).  Was told by my local dealer that older cars tend to run hot.  Blew a head gasket in 2004 and replaced the engine with a factory rebuilt one.  Got a new watter pump when the engine replaced.  Still had same heating problem.  Recently the temp gauge began to register at 80% at any speed. replaced the fans and the radiator.  Now back to the old problem - runs hot in heavy traffic but runs reasonably well at high speeds. Any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem?

Answer
Hi Chalmer

Have you tried checking your thermostat? A lot of times, I even recommend removing the guts and replacing the shell. This way you can have circulation, but in moderate amounts. If the water circulates too fast, it won't have a chance to cool while in the radiator.

Hope this helps -
