Nissan Repair: 1983 gas and heat gauge stopped working, speedometer cable, pencil eraser

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1983 720 nissan z engine my gas and heat gauge work and then they don't for some reason.. what could be wrong?

ANSWER: Lee,

Check the harness in the cluster to see if it is corroded.  Remove the cluster to do this.  If this is good then check the alternator for proper output.  Autozone or Checker will perform a free electrical inspection.

QUESTION: um were is the harness??

Answer
Lee,

I am sorry for not being more descriptive.  Remove the instrument cluster by taking off the trim and then the four screws that hold it in.  Then, pull it out until you can get to the speedometer cable and the harness connector in the back if it.  Clean the contacts with a number 2 pencil eraser and blow off the dust and then reconnect it to see if it starts working.  Usually, when the cluster blows nothing works, so that is why I think you just have a connector problem.  If this fails and you have a good alternator get a wrecking yard (used) cluster off of ebay or the like.
