Chrysler Repair: crankshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, crank sensor

Question
I have been trying to FIND the crankshaft position sensor so that I can replace it. The after market manual I bought says it is directly below the distributorbut the dodge service manual says it is on the bell housing. HELP! I have worked on cars boats and planes all of my life and this thing is getting ready for the long drive off a short pier. Thank you for any help.

Answer
Hi Douglas,
Would you please tell me which engine (year, displacement, no. of cylinders) is in your vehicle? On most of the engines the crank sensor is positioned on the bell housing at the seam between the engine and the trans, inserted thru a hole, with its tip placed very close to but not touching the flex plate (flywheel equivalent on an automatic trans set up) which has slots in its surface which activate the sensor. All you will see is the wires and connector plug, and the neck of the sensor held in place by a bolt. The slot thru which the bolt fits is oblong so that the position of the sensor can be adjusted in or out. When you get a new one, leave the paper spacer on its tip, press the paper against the surface of the flex plate, and tighten the bolt to about 105 inch-ponds or 8 foot-pounds. The paper is rubbed off but establishes the space for the sensor to be close to the surface but not in contact with the flex plate.
But to be sure, tell me about which engine you have.
