Nissan Repair: Manual Transmission issue, manual transmission fluid, worn clutch

Question
Hi Von Sudderth,

I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier v6 4x4 with a manual transmission. When driving and with the clutch pushed in to down shift (especially into 2nd and 3rd) I am getting a chattering like one of those spinning wheel of fortune wheels until I release the clutch. I was wondering what this problem could possibly be?

The manual transmission fluid was just changed, engine temperature is normal.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Drew,

Either the throw out bearing is wearing out.  That would cause noise at idle with the clutch pushed in.  Or, you have a worn clutch that is rubbing on the pressure plate.  This would not cause noise at idle but at higher speed like shifting between second and third you would get the chattering noise.  So, it sounds like you need to pull the transmission and service the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.  Costs about $300 in parts.  You will have to check around on labor in your area if you are not going to do it yourself.
