Nissan Repair: Nissan Pintara 1991, neutral safety switch, voltage tester

Question
Battery fine, will not start, used to have to juggle automatic gear stick to get her to start.............desperate mum who needs to get kid's to school but living way out of town and no mechanic's close by

Answer
Hi Domina -

If you are sure the battery is fine, then judging from what you say, looks like the neutral safety switch. Can you start it in neutral? If so, then definitely so.

If it does not start in both neutral and park, then there is a chance it might be ther starter. A quick home check is to tap the starter with a hammer while turning the key to start. If it starts, replace the starter.

There is a defined way to test each component, however you will need a voltage tester or 12V test lamp.

The first step is to find out if power is going to the starter when you turn the key. If so, then the starter is defective. If there is no power, then it could be the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or fusible link.

Hope this helps
