Nissan Repair: 1996 nissan altima gxe, nissan altima, fuel leaks

Question
I recently purchased this altima for my daughter and 1). the temperature gauge doesnt work... where is this located on the engine, 2) the fuel gauge constantly goes up and down regardless of how much gas is in the tank... why?, 3) the fuel leaks somewhere possibly in the line not the tank... whats the best way to troubleshoot this if I do not see the leak anywhere?

Answer
John,

There are two temperature sensors on the engine.  Both penetrate the block to get to water.  The one you are looking for is close to the thermostat neck.  If the fuel gauge goes up and down either the sender in the tank is bad or the gauge itself is defective.  I would say the sender in the tank is the problem from my experience.  The fuel leaks are above the gas tank.  You cannot see them since the tank is installed.  The hoses, for some reason, rot above the tank.  Run the gas as low as you can and then drop the tank and replace the hoses.  While you are there pull the pump and replace the fump assembly that includes a new sending unit.  The hoses are metric so be sure to use the correct size.  I would suggest going to the dealer to get the correct hose size.  If costs a little more but you will get the correct size.  Be sure not to use a drop light and do it where there is plenty of ventilation and have someone standing by with a fire extinguisher to be safe when you drop the tank.
