my 1997 nissan maxima brake lights wont turn off even when the car is off. please help

Hi Brian -

There are 2 things you will need to check:

1. Most likely it is the brake switch pad. If you recently saw a rubber disc on the driver's side floorboard, then this is your problem. Follow the brake pedal towards the top of the shaft and you will find the bracket that holds the rubber stop for the brake switch. If the rubber is missing, then replace it and you should be fine. You may purchase it from most auto stores and it costs pennies.

2. The other thing that is popular with Maxis is the cruise control relay. If the above does not work, then replace the relay.
