Lincoln/Mercury Repair: 02 Sable bucking, torque converter clutch, clutch plate

Question
Dinger,
I took the car in and there were no codes to be identified.  The car still has the shutter feel when you reach around 40-45 mph or a jerk feel and then from there, the car is smooth.  One place that I went too, told me that it was the clutch plate and bearing and wanted to charge me about $1100 for a repair.  A rebuild would be about $1900 if no additional parts would be needed.  The second place I went too, did not see the need for any repair as of this time since it appeared to him as a minor problem and wanted to sell me an additive at $25.00 a bottle and a service.  Needless to say, I do not know what direction to turn.

-----Question-----
Dinger, there are no trouble lights on the dash at this time.  But by experience with another vehicle, I have learned that the trouble lights do not always show when a problem occurs.

-----Question-----
Dinger, My 02 Sable will jerk or buck when I reach 40-45 miles per hour.  If I continue to speed up, it will not continue.  Is this a tranny situation or something else?

Hi Dave,

Your transmission is not shifting because it is in fail safe. This is first and reverse only. The reason it's bucking is because you are reaching the rev limiter which is trying to protect the engine. That check engine light on the dash is telling you that there is a problem and it needs attention. It's likely a minor problem with a sensor or solenoid in the transmission. Run your car down to someone who can scan it. Cottman transmission will do this for free.

Have it scanned and let me know the codes.

Answer
HI Dave,

Order yourself a bottle of Lube Guard for Ford. eBay has them for like $6.00. I think what you are experiencing is torque converter clutch chatter and the lube guard will fix this. Better yet, run down to your favorite auto parts guy and get a little thingie of "shutter fix". Drive it about 100 miles, not necessary to do it in one day. Try this, I think it will "get er done".
