Nissan Repair: 1989 Pathfinder- transmission?, torque converter, zingg

Question
We have a 1989 Pathfinder.  While driving it, we heard a zingg like a chain broke. Then we could no longer move.  My husband checked the drive chain in the transfer case and it was fine not broke or off.  So do we automatically assume that the transmission went out?

Answer
Jessica,

If the engine runs and you heard a noise I would think the troque converter broke.  You say the transfer case chain is intact?  So, when you put the vehicle in gear (automatic I assume) it would be the torque converter.  If not and your driveshaft still rotates, in gear, then look at the rear end.  You could attempt to put it in four wheel drive and see if the front will lock and pull the truck.  If the rear end is gone that would work to get it to a shop.  Check it out and email me back with what you find.
