Nissan Repair: Engine stalled and died after losing electric power, nissan maxima, autozone

Question
Have 1994 Nissan Maxima.  No leaks and timing belt and all changed at 90K miles.  Car now has 102K miles. Last weeek I curising 40mph when the engine lost power and speed dropped to 10 mph.  AC turned off and I can see head lights are dim.  Came home slowly (car was still stalling and will not go more than 10mph with accelerator to the floor).  Car did not start next day but did after jump start.  Replace a brand new battery and car ran fine for a week.  Today on the way home, the same thing happened again.  Except this time, while driving not only did the ac stop but I can see the headlights/dash lights all go almost blank.  Car will not go more than 2-3 mph with accelerator to the floor and will not climb uphill streets.  Coasted home and as soon as I took the foot off the accelerator, the car completely died.  Cannot even use power lock to lock doors.  No lights (dash/headlights) etc.
As soon as I got off the car, I can smell strong burning smell for a long time.  Did not dare open the hood to check.  I am at a loss as to what went wrong with the car.  I am thinking some thing bad with the engine but it will not explain electric issues (ac off, all lights go out).  Alternator was replaced about 2 years back.  Appreciate any insights. Do I have to junk it?  I can't afford a new or used car now.  Thanks.

Answer
Kishore,

Check the alternator.  I would take the battery and get it charged.  Then, reinstall the battery and take the car to Autozone or Checker and have them perform a free electrical inspection to verify the alternator has failed.  Rebuilt alternators do not last nearly as long as the factory alternator.
