Auto body repair & detailing: Paint Bubbling, rust hole, rust spot

Question
William:  I have a very small (dime sized) paint bubble on the rear fender of my show sports car.  Only comes up when the air is very humid or it has rained - area in question was repainted 8 years ago due to minor accident, bubbling just started recently.  Car is very well maintained, never driven in winter, etc -- so don't think this is rust underneath?

Read at another web site that bubbling likley due to small microscopic breaks in paint causing humid air  to enter (and expand when heated by sun).  Site said this could be caused by flash time issues when paint was first applied to repair.

Is there any good way to seal up the paint (clearcoat) to stop this?  I realize this couldn't be done until weather was very dry and bubble had gone flat.

Trying to avoid a full repaint or spot repair due to color match issues since rest of car's paint  is nearly flawless.  Thx!

Answer
I think someone is overthinking the problem. I believe you have a spot with an adheasion problem, or there is a small rust hole starting from inside of the panel. There could also be contamination or degridation of a body filler spot. If there is filler over a pin hole rust spot, the paint bubble coming and going could possibly make sense. However, this is a new one on me. Sorry, but there is no easy fix for ANY paint flaw, other than small scratches or dirt in the paint. It simply needs repaired and painted. Any painter worth his salt can fix and paint the panel with an excellent match, be it thru tinting, blending, or both. Expect to pay no less than 5 hundred dollars, being the car is a show car. That price is without really any body work. If you have a rust hole, it will be significantly higher. Sorry for the bad news. You may try fishing around for a different answer, but the longer you wait to PROPERLY repair this problem, the more damage the steel may be suffering. The problem won't go away, ever, I promise you. Hope this helps! Bill
