Nissan Repair: timing chain, nissan maxima se, nissan maxima

Question
My 2000 Nissan Maxima SE has 139000 miles on it. Today I heard a noise, which got louder with the air conditioner on. I went to the local mechanic, and he said my engine cooling fan was bad on the right side. I took it to another mechanic, and he said the timing chain was bad. When I got back in my car, it would not start. The engine turned, but would not start. What could be the problem? My nissan service department said if it is the timing chain, it is going to cost about 2000.00 to fix. PLEASE HELP, THANKS.

Answer
Lacy,

If it was running when you brought it into the shop and now will not run does that mean that it is still at that shop?  If that is the case I would have it towed to another shop to get it checked out.  Now, if it is at the dealer they found this problem and that is where it is then I would have them look at it.  $2000 grand is normal for a timing chain.  But, I would not suspect that would be the problem.  I would be looking at a pulley on the outside of the engine first. If you have not had plugs installed do so.
