Nissan Repair: would not start on parking, neutral safety switch, shift linkage

Question
QUESTION: 97 altima with 130k miles would not start on parking gear. It starts when you push the gear lever little harder towards parking. could you please advise what to do to fix this

ANSWER: Hi David -

Looks like the neutral safety switch needs replacing, or adjusting. This switch allows the car to start in neutral or park, but not in any other gear.

It should be attached to the transmission near the linkage coming from the steering column. Replace that and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: Hi Calvin,
Thank you so much for your quick response. Is this something I can do it on my own? Could you please guide me how to do it?
I really appreciate your help.
David

Answer
Hi David -

The switch is usually simple to replace. You do need some basic tools, though, like ratchet drives and sockets, perhaps some open end wrenches.

I forgot to mention that what you need to do first is find out why you are having a hard time getting it into park. Check all the linkages and sometimes you will find a plastic bushing broken or missing. These bushings are located at each joint of the shift linkage. If there is excessive play in the shifter, then this is probably so. Can you please check this before we go on?
