Nissan Repair: Nissan Frontier water pump, critical alignment, nissan frontier

Question
We have a 2003 Nissan Frontier, 3.3 liter engine, and has 73,000 miles. I took it in to the dealership for a timing belt/ water pump change. They said they removed and inspected the water pump and said it was O.K. My question is If they really did an inspection of the water pump , how many more miles will it be good for? Can I replace it myself If I have use the Haynes maintenance book?

Answer
Hi William -

Replacing the water pump when changing the timing belt is a common and practical exercise. It only takes a few more minutes once the belt is removed. Although the pump does not normally fail, you are in there already, and it might as well be replaced. I have seen water pumps last the lifetime of the car, and I have seen many replaced. I guess it just depends on driving conditions and maintenance. Keeping the antifreeze clean is a big factor.

Replacing the pump is easy. The only challenge would be the timing belt. There is a certain sequence, and critical alignment of the engine before removal. However, with a little patience and direction, it can be done.

Hope this helps -
