my 99 sentra 1.6 auto trans locks up in rev. when you put it in R it engauges, as you accel. it's like you have your foot on the brake. it is in F & R @ the same time. also in N it will creep forward and has a 2nd gear start. Tom

Transmission is locked in second as a safety measure to get you to a shop without cooking the rest of the transmission.  Take it to a transmission shop that has a computer scanner for Nissan transmissions.  You guessed correctly on the issue with second and reverse being locked together.  My bet is the valve body is sticking or a servo has failed.  But, to know for sure take it in...
