Nissan Repair: Emergency Brake Issue, nissan pickup truck, rear brake drums

Question
I have a 1993 Nissan pickup truck (4cyl) somehow I have broken the Emergency Brake cable. Now when I pull up on the brake lever there is no tension. I can tell that it is not doing anything. Also now when driving it sounds like the rear brakes are scrubing.
What would be the best way to troubleshoot/repair the cable?

Answer
Hi Dean -

Looks like the cable probably broke at the lever in the rear brakes. The cable goes to each side of the rear brake lining via a lever that applies the brakes manually when you pull on the handle. You will need to remove the rear brake drums and inspect the cable to see what happened. Sometimes the hook slips off, and just needs to be refastened. If that happened though, you need to adjust the rear brakes. The scraping you hear is most likely the loose hook rubbing on the drum.

Hope this helps -
