Nissan Repair: 96 maxima exhaust, replacement converters, performance muffler

Question
Von, I am replacing my stock exhaust on my 96 maxima se 3.0 auto. What I
am wondering is: I will be replacing the headers, and y-pipe along with a
new performance muffler. my problem is this, because my new muff. is not
catback, will I have to use my old converter? also what should I take into
consideration (as far as extra replacement?), almost my whole underside is
rotted/rusted. I appreciate any tips you have on this job..

Answer
Calvin,

You can use the original converter.  But, with the age and miles it would be a good time to replace it.  Random Technology and others make replacement converters that flow as good or better than the original.  I would keep it in the factory location and if there is rot like you say I would check all the points where the exhaust is going to hang from to make sure it is sound material.  If you are replacing the manifolds be careful not to break off exhaust studs in the heads so spray a libricant on the bolts for a couple of days prior to taking things a part.  I have a Magnaflow on my Maxima and love the power and sound.  If you do not replace the resonator the car is going to be way loud so just a warning.  I ended up getting a resonator put on mine due to the excessive noise.  A little noise is nice but if you cannot hear the stereo you won't like it.  Stillen, Cattman and others are out there with bolt on systems if you do not have a custom exhaust shop in your area.  Do a google to get their website information.
