Nissan Repair: 1997 Sentra Tranny fluid change?, tranny fluid, transmission fluid

Question
QUESTION: At what mileage should the fluid be changed?

do i run the risk of the fluid change causing any problems? I have heard both sides of the story. It is ok, BUT i have had people tell me that it could cause more problems changing it. Please tell me your opinion based on what you have seen.

ANSWER: Dave,

A couple of thoughts on changing the transmission fluid.  If it is in warranty and you are showing good faith on maintenance you should change every 25,000 miles.  I do this anyway.  Otherwise, there are those that drive it until it drops.  That is, never change it.

QUESTION: So do I run any risk that if it wasn't ever changed, it has 115K miles, will it be an issue to do it now? The mechanic seems to think it might be bad to do it now. What should I do?

Answer
Dave,

If the fluid is burnt smelling and brown it will need to be changed.  You hope for the best and it might get you by for now.  If it is burnt and you wait it could destroy the transmission much sooner.  I would change it and hope for the best.
