Nissan Repair: 1997 nissan Pathfinder 3.3L V6, air control valve, nissan pathfinder

Question
Hi, I have 1997 Nissan pathfinder 3.3L V6 and im trying to figure out the
problem i have and maybe someone can help me. The only way i can describe the
problem is when I'm driving a steady speed saying 55 mph out of no wear the
rpm's will race from 2200 rpm's to 3400 rpm's and then jump back . But some
times it will hold on 3400 rpm's for a while and then jump back . Can some one
help not sure if it is the Trans. or idle air control valve.

Answer
Anthony,

If the RPMs jump and you have an automatic and are in gear at a steady state I would say the transmission is slipping.  Take the Pathfinder in and have the dealer or a transmission shop check it with their computer.  There should be codes set since it is slipping. Either the valvebody is sticking or the pump or converter is failing.  To be sure get it checked soon before it damages the transmission since that will cost more money to fix in the long run.
