Nissan Repair: expansion valve, heater hoses, haynes manual

Question
My 88 Nissan pickup needs an A/C expansion valve..how hard is it to put in

Answer
Derek,

If it is like the ones I have done it is under the dash in the evaporator case and it is difficult.  But, not impossible.  Plan on the day and get a Haynes Manual for photographs.  Basically, you remove the glove box and other items to get to the evaporator case and then disconnect the lines on the outside, under the hood, and then unbolt the case and drop it.  Remove the case from the truck and part it and inside you will see the evaporator core and the expansion valve.  Disassemble the old one and install the new one with a new o-ring and use PAG oil on the oring and threads to aid in installation.  Reassemble the case and install it and then reconnect the lines and the heater hoses and then pump down, evacuate the system, using a vacuum pump, and recharge the system.  You will need to bridge the pressure switch to get the compressor to come on until you get a can in the system.  I put two in and then reconnect the switch.  Fill the system to the amount on the airconditioning sticker under the hood.  Be sure to top off the antifreeze since you had to disconnect the heater hoses too...
