Nissan Repair: Dodgy suspension?, control arm bushings, stuck brake caliper

Question
Hi,

I've recently purchased a lovely 1991 Nissan Maxima, which from a quick once over seemed to have no noticable problems. However, after a moderate drive today, the rear of the vehicle has begun to squeak and make a 'groaning'/creaking sound (similar to the noise of the paddock fences in Jurassic Park, if you understand what I mean!).

The drive did involve a few unsealed sections and potholes, if this information is of any use to you.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, particularly regarding cost and duration of repair time.

Jenn

Answer
Jenn,

The noise could be as simple a the lower control arm bushings on the front of the car or a more costly item like strut replacement.  If the car drives and handles fine I would look at bushings first.  Now, we need to look at where the noise is coming from.  Front or back and one side or both.  Another thing, does it do the groaning all the time as this could be as simple as a stuck brake caliper allowing a brake pad ot two to drag and make noise.  Check these things out and let me know what you find.  We will isolate it further if need be.
