Nissan Repair: front crank seal leak, nissan altima, rubber seals

Question
Hi, I have a 1998 Nissan Altima with 189K miles. I went to Nissan for a 100 pt
courtesy check and he said i have a  front crank seal leak. Is this an expensive
repair? Considering the age of the car, is this  a must repair?  Thanx, Fred

Answer
Hi Fred -

Yes, this is a pricey repair. Most of the engine has to be taken apart. If the leak is not too bad, the car can live with it, as long as you keep note of the oil level.

there are some incredibly awesome oil stop leak products sold by Carquest, or even Checkers. When added to your oil, it expands rubber seals, and some leaks actually are stopped because of that. In my 16 years of experience, I have seem it many times. You might want to try to get an "Oil stop leak" additive. Nothing to lose.

Hope this helps -
