Nissan Repair: Nissan Maxima 2.0 V6 SE Timing Chain, nissan maxima qx, chilton manual

Question
Hi.

I have recently acquired a 1999 Nissan Maxima QX 2.0 V6 SE here in Ireland. The timing chain (or as near as I can tell!!) is quite loud as the vehicle is revved. Could this be a sign of wear on the belt, or a tensioner issue. Oil was below the E mark on the dipstick, but has since been topped up. Would this have anything to do with it?

Could you also please indicate how difficult a job it is to replace the chain and tensioners for an ordinary mechanic in terms of labor hours?

Sorry for all the questions!!

Answer
Hi Mark -

The chain could be very well the cause of the noise. If it is a metallic noise, then it is probably so. Yes, you are correct, it could be simply the tensioner, however while you are in there, it is a good practice to replace everything since you have it out anyway.
Lack of oil is a good cause of noises, collapsed lifters is one of them.

A competent mechanic can replace the chain in 3 hours or less. The Chilton manual is a good reference for labor hours.

Hope this helps Mark -
