Nissan Repair: 87 Nissan Maxima, throttle position sensor, mass airflow sensor

Question
My car was running perfect when I shut it off and 2 hours later when I started it to drive home the engine started and died and when I tried to restart it I had to hold the gas pedal to the floor and it started and ran but only if I kept it running over 2000RPM and it smoked black excessively and smells real strong of raw fuel.

Answer
Dave,

I would check for the check engine light first to see if there are any codes present.  If no codes we are looking at too much fuel.  So, check the fuel pressure first to see if the regulator is blown.  Get a Haynes Manual for the procedure for fuel pressure test.  If the fuel pressure tests correctly, then look at leaky injectors by pulling plugs and seeing which ones are black and wet.  Other causes that are not fuel related but can cause the over rich condition are a defective mass airflow sensor and or the throttle position sensor.
