Nissan Repair: car, radiator fans, nissan maxima

Question
I have a 97 nissan maxima and im having an over heating problem. I have bought a temperature sensor but am having trouble figuring out exactly were it goes. can you expain it to me?

Answer
Hi Royce

The temp sensor usually goes somewhere near the water outlet, or it could be on the radiator. Look for similarity in terminals.

My other question is, are you sure it is the sensor? It could be a stuck thermostat. When the car is warmed up, feel the top hose and then the bottom hose. If one is very hot, and the other is way cooler, then you got a stuck thermostat. When that happens, there is not hot water to activate the temp sensor, which in turn activates the fans.

Are the radiator fans working? The second common thing is the fan motors could be shorted. Again with the engine hot, you should have a signal (power) going to the fan. If the fans is working, then all is OK. If it is not, then check the leads going to the fan harness. One of them should have power (Use a light circuit tester). If there is power and the fan is not working, replace the fan motor.

If all this fails, get back to me and we can continue with the diagnosis.

Hope this helps
