Nissan Repair: 1997 nissan maxima se, nissan maxima se, nissan maxima

Question
QUESTION: I recently bout a 1997 Nissan maxima se with 98,000 miles. I was driving it, smelled burning smell like oil and it stalled and then cut off. I crank it back up drove for 5 minutes and then heard a loud pop noise. I immediately pulled over, and had it towed. The repair shop said there was no coolant in the car, and it over heated. They flushed the coolant system, replaced the hose. Problem is I still smell the burning smell, what could this be?

ANSWER: Hi precious -

Couple questions for you -

Is the car running rough or does not have power?

Is it still overheating?

Chances are what you smell is the residual of what had happened, and should go away after a while. However, please check on my questions above and get back to me so you do not go through this again, cause it could ruin the engine.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: Calvin the car is running fine, no shaking, no stalling. The thermostat needle isn't showing that the car is running hot. I am worried that it could be the thermostat. The mechanic didn't really go into detail about what caused the problem.

ANSWER: Hi Precious

OK, that is a relief!
First of all if you could get the info as to why your car overheated it will help my diagnosis a lot.

Normally the most common cause is a stuck thermostat. A lot of times if the radiator hose breaks, they just change the hose and do not research why the engine overheated in the first place and it overheats again. I am thinking this is not the case with your car, but I want to be sure -

QUESTION: Hi I drove the car on Sunday for about minutes, noticed a large amount of smoke coming out of the tail pipe, it wasn't dark smoke. I immediately drove back home. when I called the repair shop back they told me it was because I didn't warm up the car(never warmed it up prior to this) and that it needed an oil change. Do you agree with this? I was told by someone else that it sounds like a head was blown.

Answer
Hi Precious

I do not concur with the repair shop. Looks like they are stringing you. If you have the resources, I would check the compression on each cylinder. That would tell you if you have a blown head gasket.

Please do so, and get back to me so we can continue -
