Several things could cause this.  First, check to make sure the vehicle has been tuned and that the sparkplugs have been changed recently.  My first bet is the mass airflow sensor.  But, check the codes to be sure.  Also, it could be the converter that is melted and restricting the exhaust.  Check for computer codes by going to Autozone or Checker and they will do it for free.  Email me back with what you find.
