the gas guage and the the temp guage stopped working at the same time. where should I look first and is the intrument cluster hard to dismantle?

Yes, the gas gauge and temperature gauge failing at the same time would lead me to think the instrument cluster is the source of the problem.  I would first look at the fuses and then remove the cluster and backprobe the harness for continuity.  That is, get a Haynes Manual for the pinout on the harness connector and get a test light to test the circuits.  Both should cost $25 bucks total and then it is just a matter of removing the cluster and going to work.  If you need more email me back.
