Nissan Repair: 95 nissan pathfinder, nissan pathfinder, egr valve

Question
QUESTION: Calvin, I just bought a 95 pathfinder w/3.0 V6 and noticed a 100 to 200 rpm surge when pulling any small grade. After it drops a gear and the rpm raise quit a bet it stops.

ANSWER: Hi Jason -

I am assuming this is a manual shift?

If so, I would check the clutch, as it seems like it is slipping. A good way to field test the clutch is to travel about 25 MPH, then place it in 4th or 5th gear, and release the clutch. Try to accelerate the vehicle. If it seems to just rev up without gaining speed, then your clutch probably needs replacing. This field test os for extreme instances, so I would still check the clutch.

If you car is automatic shift, then check your transmission oil level and condition. If all is fine, then it looks like you need a trans overhaul.

Do you have any warranty from the person or entity you purchased from? Or can you take it back to have them check it?

Let me know the results of your findings -

Hope this helps

QUESTION: Calvin,
It's an automatic and the tranny was my worse fear, but earlier I had the vehicle in park and held the accelerator at a steady 2500 rpm's and it still had surge of 100/200 in rpm's. I'm hopeful in assuming that this now deals with just a small engine problem, maybe o2 sensor or egr valve or vacuum line.

Answer
Hi Jason -

OK, probably not the trans.

Do you have an engine light on?

When was the last time it was tuned up? I know you just purchased the vehicle, but I feel you must eliminate the easy stuff first before going on with the diagnosis.

Does this happen only at certain times? In other words, does it matter when the engine is hot or cold?

Thanks for being patient with this. These questions are important clues as to what is going on with your vehicle.
