Nissan Repair: 1997 nissan altima, nissan altima, clutch pedal

Question
QUESTION: Could you please tell me why my car would not stay running when I push the clutch in? This problem has been going on for at least 6 months.

ANSWER: Hi Kim -

If you would, I need more information.

When you depress the clutch pedal, are you stopped, or driving, or coming to a stop?

Does it lurch when you depress the clutch and the engine dies?

What gear when you are depressing the clutch and it dies are you shifting to, or does it matter?

Thanks, Kim, I want to help you, and answers to these questions will help with the diagnosis -

Let me know!

QUESTION: This will happen anytime you push the clucth in. No, it does not lurch. it doen't matter.

Answer
Hi Kim -

Wow, that was quick. Thank you for your reply.

OK, I forgot to ask if you know what your idle speed is. I think your car has a tachometer next to the speedometer. Proper idle speed when the engine is running in neutral should be about 750RPM. If it is much lower than that, raise it and see what happens.

Can you explain to me how it reacts when you start it? Don't you have to depress the clutch to start the engine? Does it die immediately after you start it then because you have the clutch depressed?

Thanks
