Nissan Repair: 4wd not engaging., nissan terrano, rear wheels

Question
hiya,
i have a nissan terrano and got stuck in snow yesterday. now i tried to use the 4wd it showed as it should on the dash board but it did nothing. i was lucky if i moved 5 meters in an hour because my rear wheels were spinning but the front ones weren't. now i'm no expert in 4wd but i thought that when you you engage in 4H or 4L all 4 wheels should be spinning for better traction isn't it. please help i need to know whats wrong with my car and is it an expensive fix.  thanks.

Answer
Manoj,

You will have to get the vehicle in the air to see what the problem is.  If the transfer case is not applying you will need to see if the electrical connection is pulled loose or if the differential is blown.  Basically, you put the vehicle in four wheel drive and see what turns and what does not.  Check your visor to make sure yours is four wheel drive on the fly or if you have to apply and then put it in reverse to get it to apply.  Email me back with what you find.
