It depends what you want to do as a rock crawler.  With money and time you can get a lift kit, both body and chassis to get it up in the air.  The transmission should be an automatic if you want to do rock crawling.  Is your an automatic and 4X4?  If not that is where you want to start.  Another issue is getting wheels and tires that will allow for even more clearance.  Boxing the frame helps with torsional rigidity of the frame and the addition of a full roll cage is a must for safety as is a wench on the front and going with tube bumpers for additional clearance.
