Nissan Repair: 2001 sentra SE shifter, b m shifter, shift assembly

Question
I got a 2001 sentra SE with a B&M short shift, the shifter feels lose so i think that the bushing on the shifter is gone but it also no longer centers and flops around quite a bit i think its some sort of spring but need help to determine what the problem is. also any diagrams of the shift assembly would be helpful also.
Thanks
Josh

Answer
Josh,

The B&M shifter could just be loose in that the bolts that hold it to the housing need to be tightened.  When you say the shifter does not center when not touched leads me to think that it is loose.  What you will need to do is remove the console cover and the rubber boot along with the shifter knob.  Under this is a plate with four bolts that hold the shifter in.  The shifter is pressed into a nylon ring that is probably loose since that is what it sounds like.  Theother cause might be that someone has really beat on the shifter and caused the plastic cup to come a part in the shift rod.  It is basically a plastic insert that takes up the slack where the shifter inserts.  So, it is either one or the other and either the collar needs to be pressed back in place or replaced or the shift bushing needs to be replaced.
