Nissan Repair: 240 sx no start problem, 240 sx, shaft seal

Question
The starter turns the motor, at first it seems as if it wants to start, but then it just turns over and over and over. Plenty of gas, a new battery, new rotor.  Can you advise me on what the problem may be?

Answer
David,

It is either fuel or ignition when it will not start.  I would check the coil for electrical output since you say it has fuel. You could have a defective distributor since they are known to get contaminated with oil over the years.  Basically, the shaft seal blows and oil wicks up to the optical pickup and shutter wheel and that keeps the distributor from triggering the coil to fire.
