Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Bluebird engine cutting out., nissan bluebird, spark plug wire

Question
Hi we have a 1996 Bluebird that looses all power. This has happened at various speeds (from 20klms to 110) but more often than not in traffic and when the weather is warmer. When I say looses all power I mean the engine completely dies and sometimes wont start for 5 min's but other times it will just start again instantly.Just before it happens the engine light comes on and the rev's start to drop dramatically.

Answer
Hi Chris -

I can think of 2 things -

First, I believe it could be the ignition module. Should be located in the distributor. It is typical when the engine warms up, for it to cut out and kill the engine, and start later when it cools down. Good way to check it is to wait until the (no start) condition exists, then pull one spark plug wire. Insert a screwdriver til it locks on the metal terminal inside. While someone is cranking the engine, hold the scrcewdriver about 1/4" from any metal surface. If there is no spark jumping between the gap, change the module (be careful not to touch any metal surface while doing this!) If there is a spark and car does not start, check the fuel pump.

If ouy change the module and condition still exists, you will have to hook it up to diagnostics and find out what code made the engine light come on. Could be the computer itself.

Hope this helps -
