Nissan Repair: transmission trouble, 1987 nissan pulsar, bearer of bad news

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1987 nissan pulsar with a 1.6 liter engine automatic transmission. i have changed the filer and fluid. the trans will not shift into reverce or drive. i hade to remove the control valve assembly to replace to replace kickdown cable. will not shift.

ANSWER: Hi Juan -

I need more information.

Did you replace the control valve and then it does not shift into reverse or drive, or was that condition existing?

When you say (the last sentence) "will not shift" do you mean from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, or reverse to drive?

thank you for clarifying - it will help me to answer your question

Thanks

QUESTION: Calvin thank you for your help with my 1987 nissan pulsar transmission. the answer to your question no I did not replace the control valve.Yes it is a pre existing condition. I replace the the kickdown cable becauce it was binding. When I shift into reverce I can feel the trans want to shift but will not move. When I shift the into drive it will not move. I can go down to 1st grear and it will move.also move in 2nd grear. But not in drive. What so you think is wrong. once again thank you for your help Juan

Answer
Hi Juan -

Because it will not work in drive, but in 1st and 2nd, looks like you need a transmission overhaul. You did the right thing in trying to change the oil, sometimes that works, but it seems you have an extreme case, and the drive is shot.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think an overhaul is due. One last thing you can try, although your condition may be too far gone, but it never hurts -

Carquest sells this incredible additive called AT205. It has worked in many cases for me, reviving shot transmissions, and non shift conditions.

Try it.
