Nissan Repair: 2000 Maxima GLE Cold Start, rotten egg smell, air cond

Question
When dead cold, engine starts normally but dies when placed into gear, need 2-5 min. runtime (depending on outside temp)before I am able to drive car. Cold engine starts OK, runs at about 1300 rpm and steps down rpm normally as engine warms so it seems the engine knows what temp it is at. RPM increases as steering wheel is turned or air cond turned on, so throttle bump-up seems to work. Exhaust does have an odd odor, not rotten-egg smell but not normal. Car has 86000 miles on it, original spark plugs and ignition coils. MAF replaced last summer for a P0171 code, and fixed that problem. Computer not reprogrammed, but disconnected battery to reset. Where should I look next?
Thanks,
Ed

Answer
Ed,

Change the plugs first and see if that corrects the problem.  Also, the coils for your car had a service bulletin so check for computer codes to see if any are failing.  It will note which cylinder is not firing.  But, my first bet is the plugs are gone.  Yes, they say 100k mile plugs but at 80k they should be replaced.  I have a 2000 Maxima SE and at 80k they were gone.
