Nissan Repair: Nissan Quest 2001 Starter noise, nissan quest, planetary gear

My starter quit a few weeks ago, had it replaced by certified mechanics and after 2 days the starter, after it engaged made a loud whirling sound.  Took it back to the dealer service facility and they do not know what is causing it.  Your thoughts?  thanks

There are two things that can cause the noise.  The first is the bendix.  That is the thing that pops out to turn the engine over.  If it is dry is will make the spinning noise.  The second thing on a Nissan is the gear reduction planetary gear set.  If this is dry it will make noise too.  I would have them either remove the starter and lubricate it or replace it.
