Nissan Repair: temp. gaga, coolant level, full tilt

Question
My Nissan 2000 2.4 temp. gage fluctuates during vehicle operation. The coolant level is fine and does not over heat.

Answer
Ruben,

Usually, it is the sensor and that is much cheaper to replace than the gauge.  If the vehicle is not overheating and the gauge is moving around disconnect the wire on the sender and have someone in the vehicle, with the key on, but not running.  Now, with a paper clip insert it into the harness plug and then touch it to the engine on the metal.  You have to be quick or you can hurt the gauge.  But, once you touch it the person in the car should say the gauge is going full tilt.  If it does then it is the sensor that needs to be replaced.  If the gauge jumps around it is the gauge itself that is defective.
