Nissan Repair: 1996 nissan maxima abs help, wheel sensors, nissan maxima

Question
QUESTION: i have had the abs light on for a while now. so i went to dealer and he said all sensors are working the only thing he sugested is the abs computer that cost 4 geez from the dealer,so i bough one online for 50. just installed it and i have the same issue, so my abs computer was fine in the first place. when i start the car the light is off if i move the wheel to the right all the way light is still off but once i turn left it comes on.so something is triggering the light to go on when i go left all the way. anybody know what the problem might be.

ANSWER: Dmitri,

I would check the harness to both front wheel sensors.  There is a hall effect sensor with a square wave generator on each wheel.  There is a plug and harness that comes from the spindle to the strut and to the body.  This harness has a rubber cover that covers the wires.  Either the harness or connector is shorting or opening when the wheel is turned as you state.  Also, be sure the brake fluid has been bled properly as any air in the system or contaminated fluid will set a code.  Once you have found and corrected the problem disconnect the battery for a few minutes to clear the code.

QUESTION: Hi. Thanks for a quick reply. could it be the abs pump? and the abs is working once the light is not on

Answer
Dmitri,

The tell here is that it does it when you turn the car.  The ABS pump would not be involved if you turn the wheel one way or the other.  That is why I think it is sensor or harness related.  But, I would first bleed the system with a good non synthetic brake fluid.  Nissan uses DOT3 brake fluid and if you use synthetic it will screw up the ABS system and it takes several bleedings to get it out of the system.  I like Ford High Performance Brake Fluid since it has twice the boiling point of regular DOT3 you purchase in the store.  If the ABS pump was failing the unit should set a code for the unit and it is setting one for front correct?  Anyway, if you need more email me back and if you are in Las Vegas, NV stop by and I will look at it in person.
