American Motors: 1982 Jeep Scrambler, vacuum leaks, jeep specs

Question
Hi - I've recently been experiencing black smoke from my tail pipe. All my plug are showing normal signs and my cylinders are all running 148-150 compression readings. I've gone over the carb to look for any worn rubber or vacuum leaks and nothing. timing is to Jeep specs 6BDC.the carb is less than a year old and I replaced all the hoses with fresh ones at the time of install.  any ideas?  thanks so much for insight you might have?

Answer
These engines have been known to experience worn valve stem seals. Usaully, smoke is emitted right after start up.
As for the carburetor, is the metering rod properly adjusted? Is the float level properly set?
These both can cause rich mixtures and smoke.
