Nissan Repair: Starting Problems, 2004 nissan altima, old american cars

Question
Help,
I have a 2004 Nissan Altima. The car will not start. I have a good battery and have replaced the starter. After replacing the starter it started a few times and then repeated the problem. It just clicks when you turn the key, sometimes it doesn't even click.

Answer
James,

I cannot imagine a 2004 Nissan with starter problems.  I would be checking the neutral safety switch.  Do a simple test by bridging the starter wires and see if the car starts.  If it does, get a test light and probe the small wire at the starter and see if it lights when someone turns the key.  If it does not you have a defective neutral safety switch or even a bad ignition switch.  You will have to probe from the safety switch, if a manual it will be on the clutch pedal and if an automatic the switch is on the shift mechanism.  If there is power to the switch and not from it the switch is defective.  If there is no power to the switch look at the ignition switch for bad contacts as there is no way to get it out of sync like some old American cars.  If the switch does not provide power in start replace it.  Test this at the bottom of the column where the wires come out.  Stay away from the yellow harness for the airbag.
